Supporting verbal children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
An international workshop on supporting verbal children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) was conducted on 10th, 11th, and 12th of August at Vasant Valley School. The workshop was conducted by Jackie Harland and Joanne Lindley, senior speech therapists from London.
Children with ASD find understanding verbal language particularly difficult. They have significant difficulty extracting the exact meaning from what they are hearing. Many individuals with ASD focus on detail and fail to see the main reason or purpose for a communication or behaviour. Focusing on detail is a way of making sense of the world and helps to explain why sometimes unusual answers are given or interesting behaviour is noted.
The workshop was designed to train teachers working in primary schools and special needs departments, with children who have special needs and/or communication concerns as well as pragmatic language difficulties.
