India Story Week

We celebrated this special month-August with the’ India Story Week’, from Monday,10th August to Thursday, 13th August 2009.

We chose the stories of Panchtantra as our theme as we believe that not only are Panchtantra tales the oldest collection of stories in the world but also tell us how to behave wisely. The richness and the unique moral fibre of these stories was explored through a structured set of activities for classes I to IV.

On the first day a Power point presentation was shown to the students in Anubhav explaining the history and relevance of the Panchtantra Tales This was followed by a discussion in which the students came up with many interesting observations like we sometimes understand better when we hear it through the story.. another small PPP about a Brahmin and his four wise friends was shown to the students and was followed by a discussion on the story line, characters and the values spoken about an the story.

On the second day the teachers and the students identified the main characters of the class story they had chosen and made masks using old paper plates (Recycling is a way of our school). These masks were mounted on sticks so that the students could hold them. The younger students got a chance to see animated versions of the Panchtantra Tales.

On the third day, the students of classes III and IV explored how sounds like gurgling and rumbling can add effect to stories. They then used their creativity to make musical stories and had great fun trying to use the right rhyming word.

The last day of this week was special and culminated in each class performing their song in front of the other classes-Story tellers on a Tour. Classes III and IV went for a treasure Hunt where the clues came from parts of the story and the treasure completed the story. They then rewrote the story in their own words and published their book which is soon going to become the pride of our school.

Our learning:

Importance of Panchantra Tales: The importance of these stories lies in their ability to teach us in a very simple and basic way .This is because the tales are created around the animals and their world they cross all boundaries of race, class, religion, ethnicity and get straight to the heart of human nature and behavior, which is common across cultures ..The lessons in these stories are universal and have eternal relevance.
